Mandarin (Putonghua) predominates among more recent arrivals from mainland China and Taiwan. In New York that means Flushing in Queens above all, plus Sunset Park in Brooklyn and newer settlement across eastern Queens.
Practical considerations: Mandarin is written in simplified characters for mainland speakers and traditional characters for Taiwanese speakers — relevant for any document translation. Speakers from different provinces carry regional accents that affect comprehension. And Chinese naming order (family name first) routinely creates identity confusion in transcripts and case files if the interpreter does not flag it.
