New York’s Punjabi speakers are concentrated in Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park in Queens, with significant populations in Jackson Heights and in Hicksville on Long Island.
Punjabi is written in two different scripts: Gurmukhi (used by Sikh and Indian Punjabi speakers) and Shahmukhi (a Perso-Arabic script used by Pakistani Punjabi speakers). Spoken Punjabi is broadly shared, but written material requires the correct script — a document rendered in the wrong one is unusable.
Many Punjabi speakers also have Hindi or Urdu, but comfort levels vary and should not be assumed when someone is testifying under oath.
