Wolof is the most widely spoken language of Senegal and is also used in Gambia and Mauritania. New York’s Senegalese community centers on Harlem — particularly the West 116th Street corridor known as Little Senegal — with further concentration in the Bronx.
Many Senegalese New Yorkers also speak French, and are frequently booked a French interpreter by default. For some this works. For others, French is a formal second language learned at school and not the language they can testify comfortably in, especially when describing pain, family circumstances, or events under stress. Asking which language the person is strongest in is the difference between a usable record and a wasted appearance.
Wolof interpreters are genuinely scarce in the New York market.
