New York’s Albanian community is concentrated in the Bronx — Pelham Parkway, Morris Park, and Belmont — with further populations in Staten Island and Yonkers.
Albanian has two principal dialect groups: Gheg, spoken in northern Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Montenegro, and Tosk, spoken in southern Albania and the basis of the standard literary language. The New York community is heavily Kosovar and northern, meaning Gheg is very common in practice even though official documents are in standard Tosk-based Albanian. An interpreter comfortable only with the standard written form can struggle with a Gheg-speaking witness.
