Spanish is not one language, and NYC proves it
New York’s Spanish-speaking population is not homogeneous, and vocabulary differences are not cosmetic — they change meaning on a sworn record.
A Dominican witness, a Mexican witness, an Ecuadorian witness, a Puerto Rican witness, and a Colombian witness describing the same car accident will not use the same words for the vehicle, the road, the injury, or the sequence of events. Regional vocabulary for body parts, household objects, tools, and vehicles varies widely. So does register — how formally someone speaks when they are nervous and under oath.
An interpreter who only knows one variety will either mis-render the term or quietly substitute the word they know. On a transcript that gets compared against a deposition two years later, that reads as the witness changing their story.

What a professional Spanish interpreter actually does
- Interprets in the first person, so the record reads as the witness’s own words
- Renders everything said by every party — including hesitations, corrections, and qualifications
- Does not summarize, explain, soften, or improve an answer
- Does not advise the witness or hold side conversations
- Flags genuine ambiguity to the record rather than guessing at it
That discipline is the difference between a transcript that holds up and one that gets attacked.
Why not use a bilingual staff member or family member
- Untrained bilingual speakers summarize. They deliver the gist. The gist is not the record.
- Family members have an interest in the outcome. That is an obvious line of attack on cross-examination.
- Legal and medical terminology has no casual equivalent. “Material misrepresentation,” “subrogation,” “range of motion,” “radiating pain” must be rendered precisely, not approximated.
- A challenged interpretation can cost you the transcript. Redoing a deposition is far more expensive than booking a qualified interpreter the first time.
