Arabic is the clearest example of why “we have an Arabic interpreter” is an incomplete answer.
Modern Standard Arabic is the written and formal language. Almost nobody speaks it at home. Spoken Arabic divides into varieties that are not mutually intelligible in practice — Egyptian, Levantine (Syrian, Lebanese, Palestinian, Jordanian), Gulf, Yemeni, Iraqi, and Maghrebi (Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian). A Moroccan witness and a Yemeni witness may not understand one another’s colloquial speech.
New York’s Arabic-speaking communities are concentrated in Bay Ridge and Sunset Park in Brooklyn, Astoria in Queens, and parts of Staten Island, with strong Yemeni, Palestinian, Egyptian, and Syrian populations.
We match the interpreter to the variety actually spoken, not just to “Arabic.” Getting this wrong wastes the appearance. Note also that Arabic is written right-to-left, which matters for document and evidentiary translation.
