Insurance investigators, SIU teams, and risk management firms regularly need interpreters for three key types of examinations: examinations under oath (EUOs), independent medical exams (IMEs), and recorded statements. Here’s what each involves and why accurate interpreting matters.

What Is an Examination Under Oath (EUO)?

An EUO is a formal, recorded interview conducted under oath, typically requested by an insurance company as part of investigating a claim. It’s governed by the terms of the policyholder’s insurance contract rather than court rules. Insurers use EUOs to gather sworn testimony about the circumstances of a claim before deciding how to proceed.

What Is an Independent Medical Exam (IME)?

An IME is a medical evaluation performed by a doctor chosen by the insurance company (rather than the claimant’s own physician) to assess an injury or condition related to a claim. When the claimant doesn’t speak English fluently, an interpreter ensures the exam findings accurately reflect what the claimant reports about their symptoms and history.

What Is a Recorded Statement?

A recorded statement is an interview — often conducted early in a claims investigation — where a claimant, witness, or other involved party answers questions about an incident. These are frequently taken by phone or in person and can happen on short notice, which is why having a reliable interpreter on call matters.

Why Language Access Matters in Investigations

Inaccurate interpreting during an EUO, IME, or recorded statement can create ambiguity in the record — which matters when that record may later be used to evaluate or dispute a claim. A skilled interpreter renders what’s said accurately and completely, without adding, omitting, or softening content, so the record reflects what the person actually said.
